The first two days our driver, Sure, seemed to be decent. He complained since the first day that he waited for us since 8 am and he slept only 3 hours eventhough we informed his company that we would use the car from 10 am and the driver could come around 9 am if he wanted. We felt sorry for him so we finished our travel early so he could rest. It was minor though. The 2nd day, the van's windshield wiper didn't work on the way back to Colombo from Polonaruwu when it rained. He stopped somewhere without explaining to us and bought conditioner to pour on the window and wiped to try to slow down the water. He managed to stop at a car audio which finally fixed it. The third day that we decided to rent the car last minute (we told the driver afternoon of the second day), the problem happened. The driver said he couldn't park at the hotel so he would have to come on time. We told him to come 9:30am, but he wasn't around, so our contact who waited since 9:15am had to drive us to the company which we would have ameeting. He said he was 500 m. away and there was traffic, but our contact said that would take him 30 minutes to arrive. Our contact took us around so he just had to wait for us at the car park. We told him we would be back at 2pm. When it was the time, we were still on the way, he called to ask for 10 minutes for his lunch so I told him we would arrive later at 4pm. However, we arrived at 3:50pm, but he wasn't around the van and everyone had to wait for him. We didn't complain. We wanted to do a quick shopping before going to arrive Gampaha at 7pm, but he said the traffic would be bad. He suggested we go straight to Gampaha to meet our friend and he would take us to stop by at Negombo for shopping and drop us at the airport. Later on the way, he breached traffic law and a policeman on motorcycle came after him to issue a ticket and from then our driver went out of his mind. He made many phone calls with shaking hands. He didn't explain what happened. The situation came worse when he stopped in the middle of nowhere, locked the door and demanded for 8,000 LKR refusing to take us where he earlier promised and even to our friend's place in Gampaha. My mother and I were scared. His eyes were crossed, and he said he would take the money otherwise he wouldn't drop us where we wanted to go. He said he had to go to police and pick up someone at airport. I called his company but noone picked up and later it wasn't much help. He said he would go to police so we said we would go there with him. When we hit the main road, I tried to open the door and I could open. I got off when my mum was on the van, I was afraid he would do something to my mum but I felt we needed help. I called my friend and asked the staff of a petrol station to tell where we were so my friend could pick us up. I no longer wanted to ride with him as we felt unsafe. The owner of the petrol station walked with me to the van, and he came off. He tried to tell them that we wouldn't pay him and would go to police. I told him I was happy to go to police and no longer wanted to ride with him. I asked for all our luggages but he refused until he got the money. I waited until my friend arrive that I paid him and took our luggages. We were lucky that we have local friends and contact, but it would be scarier and more threatening to others, esp. two ladies riding alone.
